What are the best ten universities in Australia? Generally we would consider the Group of Eight (Go8) members as amongst the best 8 institutions in the country, followed by another two prestigious universities (they can be Macquarie, Flinders, Wollongong, Newcastle, ...). Here we will look at major ranking publications to justify the top 10 list:
According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, ANU is the highest rated institution in the country, placed 1st nationally and 59th globally in 2008. Three schools are placed within the Global Top 100, the other two are Melbourne (73rd) and Sydney (97th). All the Go8 members and Macquarie University are placed in the top 9 positions, with another 5 schools rated equal 10th (they are Flinders, James Cook University, Newcastle, Tasmania and Wollongong).
According to the Times Higher - QS World University Rankings 2009, Go8 institutions are all rated in the top 8 nationally and in world's top 100, followed by Macquarie (189th) and RMIT (223rd).
According to the ranking of international standing of Australian universities by The Melbourne Institute in 2007, Go8 members occupied the top 8 positions, followed by Macquarie (9th) and Queensland University of Technology (10th).
