University of Sydney

Founded in 1850, The University of Sydney (USyd) is the oldest university in Australia, with strong international reputation for outstanding teaching and research excellence.

The university has a number of residential colleges such as the Mandelbaum House, St Andrew's College, St John's College, St Paul's College, Sancta Sophia College, Wesley College, Women’s College, International House.

USyd is a member of the Academic Consortium 21 (AC21), Group of Eight, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) and the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN).

Notable alumni of the university include Nobel laureates (Sir John Cornforth, Sir Robert Robinson and Dr John Harsanyi), Prime Ministers of Australia (Sir Edmund Barton, Sir Earle Page, Sir William McMahon, Gough Whitlam, John Howard), President of the World Bank (James Wolfensohn), Astronauts (Paul D. Scully-Power, Philip K. Chapman), etc. Alumni Associations are active in overseas countries like Hong Kong, UK, Malaysia, North America.

Rankings:

- University of Sydney is ranked 36th among the world's best institutions, moving up a place from 37th in 2008 (THE-QS World University Rankings 2009).

- 4th in Australia and 125th globally in the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities 2009.

- 3rd in the nation and 97th globally in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (2008).

- University of Sydney is rated 2nd in Australia (behind University of Melbourne) and 83rd globally in the HEEACT (Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan) rankings 2008.

- Placed among the world's top 40 universities and ranked 3rd in terms of its score on the Academic Peer Review among Australian Universities. It is also placed in the world's top 50 for all the subject areas: 17th in the world for Arts and Humanities, 27th for social sciences, 41st for technology, 44th for natural sciences and 27th for biomedicine (UK Times Higher Education Supplement, October 2008).

- 3rd in the ranking of international standing of Australian universities by The Melbourne Institute (2005).
